A skateboard is a four wheeled board made from plastic or wooden with rollers at the bottom. Skateboards are hidden by youngsters to enjoy various skateboarding tricks and stunts. Skateboarding is done by pushing the board with one foot while keeping the other on the board. Skateboarding is a sport but some people use it as a means of transportation also if they are traveling short distance. People who carry out the various skateboarding activities are known as skateboarders or skaters.
The marketing of Skateboards was first done by Bill and Mark Richards who were from Dana Point, California. Bill and Mark attached roller skate wheels to a piece of wood and sold them in their Val Surf Shops. During 1970s, the materials like fiberglass, bamboo, resin, Kevlar, carbon fiber, aluminum, plastic, etc. were also incorporated into the material of skateboards to make them more durable and flexible.
Parts of Skateboards
Deck, trucks, wheels and bearings are the main parts of a skateboard. Deck is the board on which you stand on and is made of wood incorporated with the material like bamboo, resin, etc. Skateboards come in various shapes, sizes, and appearance. The size and shape of the skateboard decks vary according to the type of skating preferred. A skateboard can be long or short. A concave shaped skateboard is for expert skateboarding tricks. Some of the main skateboarding tricks are ollie, kickflips, nollie, etc.
Skateboard trucks are attached underneath the deck with nuts and bolts and are made of aluminum alloy or titanium. Skateboard trucks are also available in various colors. The hardness of the skateboard wheels also varies according to the type of skating preferred. Small and hard wheels are preferred by street skaters for performing tricks like kickflips and ollies and hard wheels are required to perform vert skating. The bearings are used to mount the wheels on the axle (part of skateboard truck).
Ways to minimizeize risks associated with skateboarding
Skateboarding is a sport which requires lots of body protection. The use of helmets, protective clothing elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads, etc help you to protect from the unexpected falls. In addition to the use of these protective devices, learning the techniques of falling is also very important to reduce the chances of injury.
